Thoughts on Celebrity Appearances in Games?

Following the news that actor Peter Serafinowicz has been cast in Dark Souls 2, what are your thoughts on celebrities in games?

Leonardo di Caprio once told Quantic Dream he could not appear in a game because it would harm his image.

His Inception co-star Ellen Page appeared in the studio’s Beyond: Two Souls last year alongside Willem Dafoe while Bethesda boasts Bill Nighy, John Cleese, Michael Gambon, and Kate Beckinsale as being among The Elder Scrolls Online’s impressive cast.

Major Hollywood actors have long lent their talents to videogames, with Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean among those who have, but do you think developers would be better off spending their casting budgets on another aspect of the game rather than chasing stars?

And does having an impressive cast sway your opinion of games as it might for a movie?

Honestly, I think it’s a waste of money. A lot of stage and film acting talent has more to do than just voicework, so not only do we lose a lot of the actors and actresses that way, we also get people who aren’t necessarily as skilled as professional voice actors. Not to say that they’re inherently bad, but there are already people waiting in the wings who can do it.

Seriously, what good is having Bill Nighy in a game if we can’t see him doing that face twitch thing he does?
