Over 1,800 Game Developers Sign Open Letter Asking for An End to Abuse

Game makers have had enough.

The internet has always been vitriolic and at the time, over 1,800 developers have signalled that they have had enough. In an open letter they have called for an end to “hateful, harassing speech”.

Games are a serious business but some people take them far too seriously indeed. There’s no need for hateful comments or threats and while they’ll always persists, we can all do our part to at least try and make talking about games online civil.

The full text of the open letter, which has been signed by Cliffy B. along with a host of key developers at major studios around the world, reads:

“We believe that everyone, no matter what gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion has the right to play games, criticize games and make games without getting harassed or threatened. It is the diversity of our community that allows games to flourish.

“If you see threats of violence or harm in comments on Steam, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, Facebook or reddit, please take a minute to report them on the respective sites.

“If you see hateful, harassing speech, take a public stand against it and make the gaming community a more enjoyable space to be in.

“Thank you.”

Lot of great content on the site today, Daly. Stuff like this only encourages trolls, though. They perpetuate this crap to get attention and humor themselves by upsetting people so when something like this comes around, it’s like handing them an Oscar.

Yeah, for us it is, but public figures would be better off ignoring it. Like that thing with Sarkeesian where they publicized that asshole on Twitter for making death threats and driving her from her own home. You know that spineless worm and his buds are still high-fiving each other over that. She should have just quietly called the cops or contacted a white hat hacker to hunt the dude down instead of making a big deal and giving the guy the exact kind of attention he was looking for.
